The excitement of a second place finish at the Kentucky Derby was short-lived as runner up Eight Belles was put down shortly after the end of the race.
The filly broke her two front ankles and collapsed after she passed the finished line and was euthanized by injection.

Being installed as the odds-on favorite for the Kentucky Derby by Churchill Down’s is no guarantee of victory.
Last year, Curlin was given 7-2 odds but 4-1 Street Sense ended up winning the entire race.
This year, Big Brown has been heralded as the favorite at +160 but another favorite is Colonel John (+400), who could potentially take “The Run for the Roses” as well.

The home of the Kentucky Derby, Curchill Downs, has added a new type of wager to their lineup after getting approval from Kentucky horse racing regulators. The new wager allows bettors to take a shot at selecting the first five finishers in a race in order.
The bet is called the Super High Five and is currently also available at Santa Anita in Southern California. Churchill Downs plans to offer the wager on multiple races each day.
