Updated December 2, 2009
Washington Capitals star winger Alexander Ovechkin was issued a two-game suspension by the NHL for a hit in game against the Carolina Hurricanes — he also sustained a knee injury from the hit.
The Caps held their collective breaths Monday night when Ovechkin went down after colliding knee-to-knee with Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason.
Ovechkin was helped off the ice, issued a five-minute major for kneeing, given a game misconduct and subsequently suspended.
The reigning Hart Trophy winner tested his injured knee before practice on Tuesday and thought that he might play on Thursday against the Florida Panthers but will miss the game instead.
Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau told the AP Ovie is day-to-day in regards to the knee injury.
